After the sitting: results, re-reads, rewrites and deferrals
Once your answers are uploaded, results take about eight weeks. This guide covers what comes next: results, re-reads, writing an exam again, and moving a future sitting. The EGBC rules it relies on are listed at the end.
This guide is Nivaar's own summary and is independent of EGBC. It may contain errors, so check the EGBC details against the sources below. Deferral dates and processes change from session to session.
Right after the exam
Keep your solutions in a secure, private place until you have your results. Exam content is confidential, and that includes your own solutions and rough work. EGBC warns that sharing it, or trying to, may affect your application for registration. Do not send us your exam questions or answers, and do not post them anywhere.
EGBC does not return your upload or a copy of the questions, and it does not release solutions.
Results
- Results come about 8 weeks after the exam. They are posted on the Application Status page of your EGBC account, and you get an email when your mark is updated. EGBC does not give results by phone.
- The pass mark for most exams is 50%.
- EGBC aims to release marks before the next registration deadline, so you can register again if you need to. If your mark arrives after that deadline and you need to write again, email exams@egbc.ca straight away: you may still be able to register for the next session.
Re-reads
- If you believe your paper deserves a higher mark, you can apply for a re-read within 30 days of receiving your result.
- There is a fee, listed in EGBC's fee schedule. It is charged whatever the outcome and is not refunded.
- The re-read mark is final and replaces your first mark, and it can be lower as well as higher.
- Papers marked between 45% and 49% have already been re-read once by the examiner.
If you failed
- A failed confirmatory exam is cleared by passing it at a later sitting. You do not have to write it again straight away, and you can write your other assigned confirmatory exams first.
- Failing the same confirmatory exam three times ends the confirmatory route. A non-confirmatory exam can be attempted at most three times. In both cases EGBC can make an exception for good and sufficient reason.
- Failed confirmatory exams count as cleared if you pass the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in your discipline of education, as long as you are still eligible for the confirmatory route. There is no limit on FE attempts.
- If you were eligible for an exam waiver through experience and chose to write exams instead, failing an exam closes the interview route.
- To write again, register for a later session by its deadline. EGBC accepts no late applications. For Spring/Summer 2027 the deadline is 31 January 2027.
- The time limit still applies. Assigned exams must be completed within 7 years, after which the application is deactivated and you need a new application and a new exam assignment, though passed exams keep their credit. To ask for an extension, email exams@egbc.ca before your assignment deadline.
- You count as academically qualified only once every assigned exam is passed.
- Before writing again, go back to the syllabus checklist and re-rate yourself topic by topic. The 12-week study plan and using worked solutions guides can help. That is our suggestion, not an EGBC rule.
Deferring a future sitting
- EGBC's deferral document for Spring/Summer 2027 (updated 24 September 2026) sets a free deferral deadline of Sunday 31 January 2027. After that date, no changes are permitted.
- You defer online, in the Exam Registration portal of your EGBC account.
- If you do not appear for a scheduled exam, you lose the fee. Opening the exam in AssessBank counts as a failed attempt with a zero score, even if you stop there.
- The deferral document says its dates and process apply to that session only, so check the current version before each session.
- The exam fee itself is non-refundable.
Fees and tax
The federal government allows a tuition tax credit for exam fees when the exam is required for professional status. EGBC points to the Government of Canada website for details.
